]]>The famous film, based on the children’s book The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum, came out in 1939 and received acclaim for its striking use of Technicolor which at that stage was still in development.
Judy Garland made a name for herself in the industry by carrying the film as the young girl from Kansas who finds herself in an unknown land.
Despite doing poorly at the box office upon its initial release, the classic went on to be nominated for 6 Academy Awards and won for Best Original Song.
Now audiences who were not so fortunate to see the film on the big screen back in the day will be able to follow the yellow brick road to select theatres in the United States which will be screening the move for its 80th anniversary.
The special screenings will be held between Sunday 27 and Wednesday 30 January.
The release will include a new introduction and post-film observations from Turner Classic Movies host, Ben Mankiewicz, who highlight some of the main storylines from the movie, as well as reveal a few behind-the-scenes details from the making of the film.
Just don’t pay attention to the man behind the curtain.

The movie is scheduled to be released this year, although no specific date has been confirmed.
