There is no point denying that gender pay discrepancy is a real thing in Hollywood.

Only a few months ago it was revealed that Claire Foy who plays Queen Elizabeth II on The Crown was being paid less than her consort, Matt Smith.

Westworld actress, Evan Rachel Wood, also detailed that from season 3 she would receive the same pay as her male counterparts which, she says, has “never, never” happened before.

Dozens of actors and filmmakers including This Is Us stars, Sterling K. Brown and Mandy Moore, veteran actress Jane Fonda, Black Monday actor Don Cheadle, and director of Selma, Ava DuVernay, have signed an open letter to Hollywood addressing the issue.

“There is an egregious wage gap for historically female-majority crafts,” the letter stated. “It’s time for the Entertainment Industry to take a hard look at its pay and compensation practices above and below the line to make sure all productions meet the legal ― and moral ― requirement to pay fairly without discrimination.”

According to Forbes, the highest-earning actors in Hollywood between June 2017 and 2017 earned a combined total of $748.5 million compared to their female counterparts with $186 million.

Matt Smith supports his Queen.

The Doctor Who actor was thrust into a pay disparity storm in March when it was discovered he was being paid more than his co-star on The Crown, Claire Foy, who is arguably the lead on the Netflix series.

Producers were forced to apologize for their faux pas, which allegedly arose as a result of Matt having a greater reputation due to his previous role on the sci-fi series.

Left Bank Pictures clarified that neither actor knew what the other was being paid, and that henceforth, “no one will be paid higher than the Queen.”

Despite Smith and Foy vacating their roles at the end of the second season due to a leap forward in the show’s time period, the 35 year old still spoke to The Hollywood Reporter regarding the controversy.

“Claire is one of my best friends, and I believe that we should be paid equally and fairly, and there should be equality for all. I support her completely, and I’m pleased that it was resolved and they made amends for it because that what’s needed to happen. Going forward, I think we should all bear in mind that we need to strive to make this better and a more even playing field for everyone involved—but not just in our industry, in all industries.”

Quite.

Gender pay discrepancy has reared its ugly head once again.

In March, it was revealed that leading star of The Crown, Claire Foy, was paid less than her male counterpart (and arguably “supporting actor”) Matt Smith.

The royal uproar prompted producers of the Netflix show to apologise and state that from season 3, “no one will be paid higher than the Queen.”

It now appears, however, that Miss Foy was not the only lead actress in a hit TV series whose pay check is bowing to that of her male co-stars.

In an interview with The Wrap, Westworld actress Evan Rachel Wood — whose character Dolores provides narration and is central to the plot — revealed that she was not paid equally for the award-winning show’s first 2 seasons.

“I think I’m just now to the point where I’m getting paid the same as my male co-stars,” she stated. “I was just told that, you know, ‘Hey you’re getting equal pay.’ And I almost got emotional. I was like, ‘I have never been paid the same as my male counterparts. Never, never.’”

But the 30 year old says that that pay hike will only kick in for the show’s 3rd season — if there is one.

“It’s more about if you’re getting paid fairly, or the same, or if you’re getting paid less simply because you’re a woman, that’s not fair,” she said.

Let’s hope there is a 3rd season — not just because Westworld is fantastic, but because Evan deserves it.
