Dwayne Johnson (The Rock) and Jason Statham may not be returning to their roles in the next Fast & Furious film (the 9th in the franchise) after branching out with Fast & Furious: Hobbs and Shaw, but the hit franchise is recruiting new names to the Toretto family.

The newest addition to the cast, as reported in Deadline, is Michael Rooker, who is known for his portrayal of Merle in The Walking Dead and Yondu Udonta in the Guardians of the Galaxy movies.

No details are known about Rooker’s role in the new film apart from his character’s name – Buddy, but it’s safe to guess Rooker will have a good chemistry with the film star Vin Diesel, who played alongside him in Guardians.

Two more new additions to the cast are UFC fighter Francis Ngannou and pro wrestling star John Cena.

It was also revealed that Charlize Theron and Helen Mirren, who joined the cast in the previous film, Fate of the Furious, will return to the new one as well. Also set to return are Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Ludacris and Jordana Brewster.

Here is something that will make you less sad about the fact we have only two Fast and the Furious movies left ahead of us (if we are to trust Vin Diesel). Netflix handed out a straight-to-series order for an animated show that will be based on this popular franchise. The series is a part of a deal Netflix made with DreamWorks Animation, which gave them a first-look at projects based on Universal film properties.

According to the synopsis revealed by Netflix, Fast and the Furious animated series will revolve around “teenager Tony Toretto, who follows in the footsteps of his cousin Dom when he and his friends are recruited by a government agency to infiltrate an elite racing league serving as a front for a nefarious crime organization bent on world domination.”

You can check out the first screenshot from the series below.

“We are thrilled to take our fantastic partnership with DreamWorks Animation to the next level with new opportunities from the vast library of Universal Pictures,” Melissa Cobb, Vice President of Kids and Family, said in a statement. “The Fast and the Furious franchise is a global phenomenon beloved by audiences of all ages, and we can’t wait to get started on the new animated series that will capture the action, heart, humor and global appeal of the feature films.”

Tim Hedrick (Voltron Legendary Defender) and Bret Haaland (All Hail King Julien) will serve as the showrunners, while Vin Diesel joins as an executive producer alongside Neal Moritz and Chris Morgan.

The Fast and the Furious film series has seen eight movies being released in the last 16 years, and has earned more than $5 billion at the box office. The two next installments in the series, which are supposed to round up the original story, are set for release in 2020 and 2021. There is also a spinoff movie in the works, Hobbs & Shaw, which will revolve around characters Luke Hobbs and Deckard Shaw and is scheduled for release on July 26th, 2019.
