The film will be directed by Inglorious Basterds star Melanie Laurent from a script by Dana Stevens. The story follows two sisters, played by Dakota and Elle Fanning, coming of age in France on the eve of World War II and their struggle to survive and resist the German occupation of France. 

“The Nightingale will be the first time we act on screen together. We have played the same character at different ages but have never spoken to each other in front of a camera. For years, we have looked for a film to do with one another and then this gem appeared,” the Fannings said Wednesday in a joint statement. “As sisters, to share our artistry with each other while bringing such a powerful sister story to life is a dream come true. We are so lucky to have our fearless director, Melanie Laurent, to guide us along on the journey. Let’s do this, sister!!”

Elle most recently starred in Disney’s Maleficent sequel, while Dakota was last seen in Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.

Angelina Jolie returns to the role of the good-fairy-gone-bad in the sequel to the 2014 retelling of Sleeping Beauty.

The original Maleficent film delved into the backstory of the Disney villain and showcased her complicated relationship with Princess Aurora, played by Elle Fanning.

The Mary Shelley actress also reprises her role as the young princess in the sequel, Maleficent: Mistress of Evil.

The second film will focus on Aurora’s upcoming marriage, which does not please the previously-scorned Maleficent in the slightest. “Love doesn’t always end well,” she warns the young woman.

Michelle Pfeiffer has joined the cast for the sequel as Queen Ingrith and seems intent on driving a wedge between Maleficent and Aurora

“Maleficent is a threat to everyone. We will do our best to protect you,” she states.

The sequel looks to be even more action-packed than the first film, which grossed over $750 million worldwide.

Maleficent: Mistress of Evil flies into theaters on October 18th.

The happy occasion for fans and actors alike, Elle Fanning took to social media, sharing candid behind-the-scenes snaps of herself and co-star Angelina Jolie. 

The adorable snaps show the 20-year-old starlet and her on-screen villainous mom back together, looking cuter than ever as they reprise their roles as Maleficent and Princess Aurora, respectively.

The pics feature Angelina in her character’s signature horns and red lipstick.

In one of the photos, captioned “Ultimate Photobomb,” Fanning sports a pair of sunglasses while Jolie, hides behind her with only her character’s horns visible. In a second snap, hilariously captioned “It’s bring your mom to work day on the #Maleficent2 set!!!!!” Angelina is seen smiling and giving the peace sign.

The sequel picks up several years after the original, following Maleficent and Princess Aurora as they “form new alliances and face new adversaries in their struggle to protect the moors and the magical creatures that reside within.”

Also joining the project are Michelle Pfeiffer as Queen Ingrith, Harris Dickinson as Prince Phillip, Aurora’s love interest, as well as Chiwetel Ejiofor, Ed Skrein, and Robert Lindsay.
