O. Russell’s frequent collaborator Christian Bale has been cast as the lead in this mysterious project about a year ago, before its production was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Margot Robbie later joined the project, and John David Washington quickly followed, replacing Michael B. Jordan who dropped due to scheduling conflict.

This movie finally started shooting in Los Angeles this month, and O. Russell ended up rounding out the entire ensemble. The full cast now includes such stars as Rami Malek, Zoe Saldana, Robert De Niro, Mike Myers, Timothy Olyphant, Michael Shannon, Chris Rock, Anya Taylor-Joy, Andrea Riseborough, Matthias Schoenaerts, and Alessandro Nivola.

Expectations are running high for this project because O. Russell directed many actors to Oscar-nominated performances in the past. The plot of this untitled movie is still being kept under wraps, and it will be O. Russell’s first directorial effort since the 2015 biopic Joy, starring Jennifer Lawrence.

The ninth film in the long-running series, titled Spiral, is billed as the terrifying new chapter from the book of Saw. It stars Chris Rock as the lead with a supporting cast that includes Samuel L. Jackson and Max Minghella.

Per Lionsgate’s official description, in Spiral: “Working in the shadow of an esteemed police veteran (Jackson), brash detective Ezekiel ‘Zeke’ Banks (Rock) and his rookie partner (Minghella) take charge of a grisly investigation into murders that are eerily reminiscent of the city’s gruesome past. Unwittingly entrapped in a deepening mystery, Zeke finds himself at the center of the killer’s morbid game.”

Veteran Saw helmer Darren Lynn Bousman will direct from a script by Josh Stolberg and Pete Goldfinger.

The FX adaptation of the Coen Brothers’ 1996 film, which won two Academy Awards, screened its last season in 2017.

Each season of the anthology series features a different cast, with those who will helm the upcoming season 4 having now been announced.

Due to be set in Kansas City, Missouri during the 1950s, Chris Rock will star as the head of a crime syndicate made up of black migrants who have an uneasy peace with the Italian crime syndicate in the city. He is forced to surrender his son to the enemy, and in turn, raise his enemy’s son as his own.

Rock will be joined by Ben Winshaw, Jack Huston, and Jason Schwartzman.

Noah Hawley, who created the series, will return as showrunner, writer, and director.

Production on season 4 of Fargo is scheduled to begin at the end of the year, with a release date set for 2020.

It has only been 9 years since the final film in the Saw franchise came out, but that appears to be long enough for the horror series to be rebooted.

And the man helping to do it?

Chris Rock.

The Madagscar star may be more familiar with comedies, but he has written a story that is being adapted by Pete Goldfinger and Josh Stolberg, which he will also executive produce.

“I’ve been a fan of Saw since the first film in 2004,” said Rock. “I am excited by the opportunity to take this to a really intense and twisted new place.”

Longtime producers of the series, Mark Burg and Oren Koules, have expressed excitement about working with the 54-year-old, saying, “Chris wants to put his own spin on the Saw franchise in the way Eddie Murphy put a completely fresh perspective on buddy-cop films with 48 Hours.

“This new Saw is going to be an event film in the making for horror fans. It will have all of the twists and turns and hardcore layers that our fans expect directed by one of the masters of the craft, Darren Lynn Bousman. We can’t wait to get started.”

Lionsgate has dated the film’s release for October 23rd, 2020.
