The Lord of the Rings creator was raised in England in the late 19th century and obtained a love for literature and language early on. When the First World War broke out, Tolkien was deployed to France.

The film Tolkien covers the late writer’s friendships with a group of fellow artists and writers, and the impact that the war had on them, as well his relationship with Edith Bratt, who went on to become his wife.

Nicholas Hoult and Lily Collins play the two lead roles, with Colm Meaney, Anthony Boyle, Patrick Gibson, and Derek Jacobi forming the rest of the cast.

The Tolkien family has now confirmed that they “do not endorse it or its content in any way.”

“The family and the Estate wish to make clear that they did not approve of, authorize or participate in the making of this film,” read the statement.

In response, Fox Searchlight said, “We are so proud of Dome Karukoski’s film Tolkien, which focuses on the early years of J.R.R. Tolkien’s extraordinary life and does not depict subject matter from his novels. While we did not work with the Tolkien Estate on this project, the filmmaking team has the utmost respect and admiration for Mr. Tolkien and his phenomenal contribution to literature.”

Tolkien opens on the 10th of May.

The world premiere of the highly anticipated Elton John biopic has been set for May 16th.

“We are incredibly honored and excited to premiere our movie Rocketman at the Cannes film festival on May 16th. This has been a labor of love for all of us, and we couldn’t dream of a better launching pad for this very special film,” said producers Rocket Pictures and Marv Films in a statement.

The gaudy and debauch-heavy film tells the fantastical human story of John’s breakthrough years. It follows John’s early days as a prodigy at the Royal Academy of Music up to his eventual musical partnership with Bernie Taupin. 

Starring as John is Taron Egerton alongside Jamie Bell, Richard Madden, and Bryce Dallas Howard.

Rocketman is directed by Dexter Fletcher, who took over as helmer on the Queen biopic Bohemian Rhapsody after director Bryan Singer was fired.

The Cannes Film Festival debut will be followed by a May 31st domestic release.

Paramount dropped a first look photo of Taron Egerton as the pop icon. There’s no doubt the transformation is complete with Egerton clad in a gold lamé jacket paired with glittery sunglasses and winged boots while lounging on a couch inside a private plane.T

The Dexter Fletcher helmed feature is touted by the studio as an “uncensored” telling of Elton’s life. The “epic musical fantasy” will take the viewers through the icon’s early years.  

Rounding out the cast are Jamie Bell, Richard Madden, Gemma Jones, and Bryce Dallas Howard. 

The film will premiere on May 31, 2019.

Variety reports that Dr. Dre will produce a biopic about Motown legend Marvin Gaye. 

Dre, whose real name is Andre Young, has already tipped his toe into film producing in the past with 2015’s Straight Outta Compton. The film which chronicled the rise of his hip-hop group N.W.A was nominated for best original screenplay at the 2016 Academy Awards and grossed over $200m worldwide.

The rapper has secured the rights to the singer’s catalog as well as his family estate’s blessing to produce the biopic. 

This isn’t the first time a biographical movie about the “Let’s Get It On” singer has been attempted, however, this is the second time a project receives the family’s blessing. The first time was in 2016 when it approved a limited series starring Jamie Foxx. 

Another on-screen project about Gaye is a documentary featuring never-before-seen footage, titled What’s Going On. Slated for a 2017 release, it has been reported that the project is still in development. 

While past attempts to dramatize the life of Gaye by Cameron Crowe, James Gandolfini and Scott Rudin never made it to our screens, hopefully, this one will.

Unsurprisingly, the sneak peek of star Rami Malek as Queen’s frontman Freddie Mercury is absolutely epic. Malek’s transformation is unbelievable and his portrayal is spot on right down to the look and moves. 

The film chronicles the band’s road to fame Mercury’s personal life and the band’s legendary 1985 performance at London’s Wembley Stadium.

After seeing Malek as Mercury it is quite a shock that he wasn’t the first pick for the role. Sacha Baron Cohen was originally cast to play the band’s late frontman, however, left the production due “creative differences.”

“Basically, they wanted to make a movie about the band and I wanted to make it a little more about Freddie,” Cohen told ET in 2013.

The production suffered another setback when director Bryan Singer dropped out due to “unexpected unavailability.” He was replaced by Dexter Fletcher in December 2017. 

Bohemian Rhapsody is scheduled to hit theaters November 2.
