Before the days of the DC Extended Universe and prior to MCU really taking off, Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy was the best superhero franchise around. Christian Bale starred as Batman and in the critically-acclaimed The Dark Knight, Heather Ledger blew audiences away with his performance as The Joker.

Now, ahead of Robert Pattison’s Batman era, Christian Bale has explained why he turned down the opportunity to play Batman a fourth time.

“We never were arrogant to assume that we had an opportunity beyond one film at a time,” Bale told the Toronto Sun. “That’s something that Chris always would talk about. He’d say, ‘This is it. We’re making one film. That’s all we’ve got.'”

“Then when they came and said, ‘You want to go make another?’ It was fantastic, but we still said, ‘This is it. We will not get another opportunity.’ Then they came and they said, ‘OK, let’s do a third one. Chris had always said to me that if we were fortunate to be able to make three we would stop. ‘Let’s walk away after that.”

He added: “Then when they inevitably came to us and said, ‘How about a No. 4?’ I said, ‘No. We have to stick to Chris’ dream, which was always to, hopefully, do a trilogy. Let’s not stretch too far and become overindulgent and go for a fourth.'”

The Dark Knight is currently rated sixth in the IMDB top 250 movies of all time.

From the paranoid Pi to the disturbing cinematography of Black Swan, Aronofsky knows how to make his audience squirm. If he were to create a Batman movie, it would be darker and grittier than ever before… kind of like Todd Phillips’ new Joker movie. In fact, the two directors both selected Joaquin Phoenix for the lead role only for Aronofsky, Phoenix would take on the role of the superhero and not the villain.

“I always wanted Joaquin Phoenix for Batman,” Aronofksy told Yahoo!. “I hear the way they’re talking about the Joker movie and that’s exactly – that was my pitch.

“I was like: We’re going to shoot in East Detroit and East New York. We’re not building Gotham. The Batmobile – I wanted to be a Lincoln Continental with two bus engines in it. It was the duct-tape, MacGyver Batman,” he continued. “It’s funny, I think we were just sort of out of time with our idea.

“I understood that [with] comics, there’s room for all different types of titles, but I think Hollywood at that time was still in the golden age of comics, and they were still just doing the classic titles in classic ways.”

Joker is out in cinemas now.

The Lighthouse actor was confirmed in May as the new face of Bruce Wayne who would be starring in the new Batman trilogy helmed by Matt Reeves.

In addition to the Batman series getting a reboot, it now appears as though the Justice League will be, too.

The first and only Justice League film came out in 2017 and saw Ben Affleck star as the Dark Knight alongside Henry Cavill as Superman, Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, and Jason Momoa as Aquaman.

While Gadot and Momoa are scheduled to hang on to their roles for the foreseeable future, it has already been announced that Cavill is hanging up his cape.

According to We Got This Covered, Warner Bros. is planning to re-launch the league (which didn’t exactly conquer at the box office) and Pattinson is likely to star as the new Batman in the film should the project actually go ahead.

It has now been announced that he will be playing another character who favors the dark… Batman.

The vigilante in Gotham City has been depicted on screen numerous times by many actors including George Clooney, Val Kilmer, Christian Bale, and most recently Ben Affleck.

Pattinson will become the youngest actor to take on the role of the Caped Crusader in the new film from Matt Reeves entailed The Batman.

The Planet of the Apes filmmaker is directing the movie from his own screenplay and will also produce alongside Dylan Clark.

Production on the picture is set to begin this summer, ahead of a June 25th, 2021 release.

Joaquin Phoenix takes on the role of the Clown Prince of Crime in what is probably the most raw depiction of the character yet.

The teaser trailer for the film, which premiered at CinemaCon, illustrates how The Joker was a man named Arthur who just went a little — okay, a lot — mad.

“My mother always tells me to smile and put on a happy face. She told me I had a purpose, to bring laughter and joy to the world,” Phoenix can be heard saying as we witness the tragedy that was Arthur’s life.

Todd Phillips is directing the origin story, which also stars Robert De Niro, Zazie Beetz, Shea Whigham, Frances Conroy, Marc Maron, Douglas Hodge, and Brett Cullen.

The “tragic comedy” comes out on October 4th.
