The Avatar franchise is James Cameron’s magnum opus, but he might not stick around until the very end. The Oscar-winning director recently discussed the future of the film series with Empire and revealed he might step down as the director of the final two installments.

If the franchise sticks to its current schedule, we’ll have to wait until 2028 for the final Avatar film to come out. Cameron described the process of working on these films as “time-consuming” and said that he might take a break to focus on other projects.

“I think eventually over time – I don’t know if that’s after three or after four – I’ll want to pass the baton to a director that I trust to take over, so I can go do some other stuff that I’m also interested in. Or maybe not. I don’t know,” Cameron told Empire.

Avatar fans spent 13 years waiting to return to Pandora. After over a decade in the making, the highly-anticipated sequel Avatar: The Way of Water is hitting the theaters on December 16, with Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldaña, Stephen Lang, Giovanni Ribisi, Kate Winslet, Sigourney Weaver, and Edie Falco playing key roles.

Cameron is plotting three more films in this franchise, set to hit the theaters on December 20, 2024, December 18, 2026, and December 22, 2028, respectively.
