This year’s WGA Awards were a long time coming, and the strike-delayed ceremony was finally held this past weekend. The Holdovers and American Fiction dominated movie categories, while Succession, The Bear, and Beef came out victorious in the TV field.

After losing the Oscar for best original screenplay at the Oscars, The Holdovers was finally honored in the same category at the WGA Awards. It was nominated alongside Air, Barbie, May December, and Past Lives, and defeated them all to take the trophy home.

Cord Jefferson’s American Fiction, the winner of the Oscar for best adapted screenplay, won big in the same category at the WGA Awards. It competed against Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret, Killers of the Flower Moon, Nyad, and Oppenheimer this time around.

When it comes to the TV categories, the main awards went to three shows that dominated the rest of the award season. Succession, The Bear, and Beef collected trophies for the best drama series, best comedy series, and best limited series, respectively, while The Last of Us was named the best new series.

After being hit by a major delay caused by last year’s writers’ strike, the WGA Awards returned to Los Angeles on April 14.

This past year has given us some pretty amazing indie films, and the Independent Spirit Awards celebrated their success on Sunday night. Past Lives was crowned as the best feature film at this ceremony, while The Holdovers topped the list of winners with three prizes.

Past Lives came into the night as one of the front-runners for the best feature award and defeated All of Us Strangers, American Fiction, May December, Passages, and We Grown Now to take it home. Celine Song brought the film’s win total to two after collecting the trophy for the best director.

The Holdovers was also among the night’s biggest winners with three trophies, including acting accolades for its stars Da’Vine Joy Randolph and Dominic Sessa. American Fiction was right behind with two awards, including best lead performance (Jeffrey Wright) and best screenplay (Cord Jefferson).

Beef led the way in the television categories and won two of the night’s biggest awards – best new scripted series and best lead performance (Ali Wong). HBO’s The Last of Us also did pretty great, and its guest stars Nick Offerman and Keivonn Montreal Woodard both collected trophies for their respective performances.

Another Toronto International Film Festival is behind us, and it brought some fantastic new films our way. Cord Jefferson’s feature directorial debut American Fiction emerged as the festival’s buzziest title and walked away with TIFF’s People’s Choice Award.

Based on Percival Everett’s novel Erasure, this acclaimed drama follows respected author and English literature professor Thelonious “Monk” Ellison. He’s so infuriated by the stereotypical depiction of the Black community in modern literature that he decides to write a satirical book that embraces all the overused clichés – only to watch it become a bestseller.

Jeffrey Wright received acclaim in Toronto for his lead role in American Fiction, but this film also stars Tracee Ellis Ross, Erika Alexander, Leslie Uggams, Sterling K. Brown, Myra Lucretia Taylor, John Ortiz, Issa Rae, and Adam Brody.

People’s Choice Award is voted by the moviegoers attending the film screenings at TIFF, and it’s widely regarded as an important indicator of the film’s Oscar chances. Recipients of this award often either received a nod or won the best picture Oscar, including Nomadland, Green Book, and 12 Years a Slave.

As for the rest of the winners at this year’s TIFF, Alexander Payne’s The Holdovers was chosen as the runner-up for the People’s Choice Award, followed by Hayao Miyazaki’s opening film The Boy and the Heron.
