It is no surprise that Roma has been selected as Mexico’s entry for the Best Foreign Language Film category at the Academy Awards.

The film by Gravity director, Alfonso Cuarón, earlier this month claimed the top prize at the Venice Film Festival, the Golden Lion.

The movie, which is shot in black and white, is somewhat autobiographical as it draws on Alfonso’s memories of growing up in Mexico City during the ‘70s. It centers around a middle-class family who is quietly and unassumingly cared for by its beloved, live-in nanny and housekeeper portrayed by Yalitza Aparicio.

Roma will vie for the Best Foreign Language Film Oscar against submissions from Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Czech Republic, Egypt, Greece, Kosovo, Luxembourg, and Montenegro, Hungary, Russia, and Iran.

47 countries have so far submitted entries, with the closing date the 1st of October 2018.

Nominations for the 91st Academy Awards will be announced January 22nd, 2019, while the ceremony will take place on the 24th of February 2019.

The red carpet has barely been rolled back and already The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences is giving us something to look forward to.

The eagerly anticipated Academy Awards (try saying that five times fast!) was delayed this year until the first Sunday of March so as to avoid conflicting with the closing ceremony of the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang.

With all skis out of the way, the Oscars can now return to a more regular date in 2019.

The Academy has announced that the 91st edition of the awards will take place on the 24th of February.

Awards season will officially kick off on the 18th of November this year when the Academy hosts the Governors Awards.

Festivities will continue in January as nomination voting runs from the 7th to the 14th and nominations are officially announced on the 22nd.

Final voting will then commence on the 12th of February and conclude on the 19th before the big day on the 24th.

Hope you’ve cleared your schedules.
