This year’s Cannes took a stand for the women.

In the 71 editions of the film festival, which takes place annually in the south of France, only 82 women have been honored by the Official Selection.

In an attempt to draw attention to the issue, Thor: Ragnarok actress, Cate Blanchett, Belgian director, Agnes Varda, led a silent protest on the red carpet.

82 female figures, including Café Society actress Kristen Stewart, Marion Cotillard of Assassin’s Creed, Selma director Ava DuVernay and Spectre star Lea Seydoux, adorned the steps silently.

Blanchett — who is this year’s Grand Jury President — read a statement declaring, “We all face unique challenges but we stand on the steps today as a symbol of our determination and commitment to progress. We are writers, we are producers, we are directors, actresses, cinematographers, talent agents, editors, distributors and all of us are involved in the cinematic arts. 82 women, representing the number of female directors who have climbed these stairs since the first edition of the Cannes Film Festival since 1946. In the same period, 1,688 male directors have climbed these very stairs.”

We look forward to seeing all the women to follow.

The 71st edition of one of the most prestigious film festivals in the world, Festival de Cannes, found its new jury president. It was announced on Thursday that Academy Award-winning actress Cate Blanchett will take over the duties in 2018’s edition of the festival.

“We are delighted to welcome such a rare and unique artist whose talent and convictions enrich both screen and stage.” said festival’s president Pierre Lescure. “Our conversations from this autumn tell us she will be a committed President, a passionate woman, and a big-hearted spectator.”

Blanchett herself also expressed the pleasure of being given the honor.

“I have been to Cannes in many guises over the years; as an actress, producer, in the marketplace, the Gala-sphere and in Competition,” said the 48-year-old actress in a statement. “But never solely for the sheer pleasure of watching the cornucopia of films this great festival harbours. I am humbled by the privilege and responsibility of presiding over this year’s jury.”

The 2018 edition of the festival is set to take place from May 8 to May 19.

Cate Blanchett is well familiar with the award-winning and giving process since she has gained lots of accolades including two Academy Awards for movies Aviator (Best Supporting Actress) and Blue Jasmine (Best Actress), three Golden Globe Awards and three BAFTA Awards. During her acting career, Blanchett starred in numerous high profile movies including the 1998’s Elizabeth, The Lord of the Rings trilogy, Babel and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.

Her most recent acting effort was Thor: Ragnarok, which was released on November 3, 2017. Blanchett is also set to star in Ocean’s all female cast spin-off Ocean’s 8 as well as lending her voice to Kaa in Andy Serkis’ The Jungle Book adaptation Mowgli.
