]]>Twitter has not been kind to the 60-year-old this week, so she has now taken to social media to defend herself.
At the MTV Video Music Awards which took place on Monday night, the Queen of Pop paid tribute to the recently deceased Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin.
At least that’s what we thought was happening…
But, Madge has now set the record straight.
In response to many who claimed that her “tribute” was self-indulgent and only briefly made mention of Aretha whilst detailing a story of how she had performed A Natural Woman during an audition, Madonna declared the following:
“Just to clarify,” she wrote on Instagram alongside a picture of Havana singer, Camila Cabello. “I was asked to present video of the year by MTV! And then they asked me to share any anecdotes I had in my career connected to Aretha Franklin! I shared a part of my journey and thanked Aretha for inspiring me along the way. I did not intend to do a tribute to her! That would be impossible in 2 minutes with all the noise and tinsel of an award show. I could never do her justice in this context or environment.”
So, papa, don’t preach.
. And just to clarify: I was asked to present video of the year by MTV! And then they asked me to share any anecdotes I had in my career connected to Aretha Franklin! I shared a part of my journey and thanked Aretha for inspiring me along the way. I did not intend to do a tribute to her! That would be impossible in 2 minutes with all the noise and tinsel of an award show. I could never do her justice in this context or environment. Unfortunately most people have short attention spans, and are so quick to judge. I love Aretha! R.E.S.P.E.C.T.
